Spring Organizing Checklist
March 19, 2025
As the snow melts and warmer days approach, it's the perfect time to refresh and rejuvenate our living spaces to prepare for the season ahead. Every year, I hear people talk about Spring Cleaning, but rarely about Spring Organizing—yet I believe organizing is just as, if not more, important. Cleaning happens on a routine basis, whether we like it or not, but organizing is often overlooked—which is exactly why storage rooms, closets, and garages tend to fill up with forgotten items over time. Even though a KonMari Tidying Festival is something you can do once and be done, that doesn’t mean you stop acquiring new items or never need to declutter again. That’s why I think it’s essential to check in periodically to maintain the tidiness in your home.
To reset for the season ahead, here are 10 things I’ll be doing for Spring Organizing:
Put Away Winter Gear
Clean and put away winter boots, hats, mitts, and heavy coats that are taking up too much space in the entryway.Joy Check My Wardrobe
Fall/Winter Items: Did I enjoy wearing them this past season? If not, it may be time to let them go.
Spring/Summer Items: Am I looking forward to wearing them? If not, why keep them?
Clothing Maintenance
I like making sure everything in my closet is ready to wear so after joy checking everything, I’ll make any repairs necessary and steam any items that needs a refresh. Before putting away my sweaters for the season, I’ll also wash them and remove any lint and fuzz with a fabric shaver so they’re ready to wear next Fall/Winter.Leather Goods Maintenance
Clean and condition my leather shoes and handbags. If any shoes need repair, I will drop them off at my local shoe repair shop.Get My Papers category in Order
Gather any loose papers from around my home and recycle, shred, scan, or file as needed. I like to also check my files to see if any of the papers in there are outdated and no longer needed.Prepare for Tax Season
Organize all necessary documents to get ready to file my taxes. The ultimate compliment is when my accountant says - you’re so organized!Dispose of Hazardous Waste
Drop off any hazardous waste that has accumulated in my "special recycling" box over the winter—things like used batteries, broken lightbulbs, and old electronics. Not sure where to discard these items? Check out the City of Calgary’s What Goes Where guide or your own local city’s guide.Joy Check Gardening Supplies
Take inventory of my plant pots, tools, and gardening supplies. I’ll also envision the garden I want this season so I can shop with intention when the garden centres open.Joy Check Summer Seasonal Items
Go through camping gear, sports equipment, picnic items, and any other Summer Seasonal items to see which ones I’m looking forward to using. If something no longer sparks joy or isn’t in good condition, it’s time to let it go.Drop off Donations & Consignment Items
Everyone has a little donation pile going in their home - including me! - especially after joy checking all the different categories in Spring Organizing. Don’t let them linger in your home. It’s time to drop them off at donation centres or consignment shops. Thank you and goodbye!
Now that I’ve made my list, I am looking forward to checking them off one by one. What’s on your Spring Organizing checklist? Let me know in the comments!
